Associate Director / Director, Medicinal Chemistry at Relay Therapeutics
Cambridge, MA, US
The Company:

Relay Therapeutics was founded on the premise that protein motion can be leveraged to create breakthrough medicines. The team at Relay is putting this principle into practice, with the aim of accelerating the development of medicines that will make a transformative difference in patients’ lives. We’re tackling a wide array of compelling target opportunities with an approach that gives us the ability to discover best-in-class drugs in cancer and multiple other areas of high unmet medical need. We’d be nothing without a visionary team that not only pulls it all together, but is willing to stand behind an exciting novel approach.

The Position:

We are looking for an experienced scientist to help us build a strong portfolio of innovative medicines through excellence in synthetic chemistry and medicinal chemistry. The successful candidate will be able to integrate a range of biophysical, computational, biological, and pharmacological data to progress drug discovery projects.

Responsibilities:

Participate in and/or lead multidisciplinary research project teams, helping to set program priorities and direction
Apply modern drug discovery and multi-parameter optimization principles to design and synthesize safe and efficacious molecules, with the goal of progressing compounds to clinical candidates
Contribute effectively to patent strategy
Help build Relay as an organization and exemplify Relay’s core values
Integrate the latest advances in biophysical (e.g. room temperature crystallography, hydrogen/deuterium exchange) and computational techniques (e.g. free energy perturbation, long molecular dynamics simulations) during hit finding and lead generation
Incorporate analysis of the competitive landscape into program strategy
Supervise internal staff and CRO-based research
May manage research collaborations with external partners
Maintain a safe and inclusive work environment
Ensure the detailed and accurate record of experiments in lab notebooks to protect intellectual property

Qualifications:

PhD in organic or medicinal chemistry, with minimum of 8 years of experience in relevant positions
Extensive experience leading hit to lead and lead optimization medicinal chemistry efforts across multiple targets and/or therapeutic areas
Proven track record of successfully advancing small molecules to development candidates as a project team leader
Strong working knowledge of structure-based drug discovery and familiarity with molecular dynamics modeling techniques
Experience coordinating internal and external chemistry teams to prepare compounds efficiently
Solid track record of impact on drug discovery projects exemplified by a record of conference presentation, peer reviewed publication, and patent inventorship
Capability to work within a dynamic matrix environment, with strong contribution to project strategies and progression
Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills
